For this issue, themed “Beyond the Letter,” we focus on the possibilities of typographic expression that transcend the role of letters as mere tools for conveying information. Chapter 1, “Thought & Philosophy,” features designers including Karel Martens, M/M (Paris), and Chris Ashworth, exploring their ideas and philosophies surrounding letters as visual expression. Chapter 2, “Inquiry & Practice,” highlights three practitioners in contemporary type design: Dinamo, Margot Lévêque, and Charlotte Rohde, each of whom gives letters distinctive individuality and form. Chapter 3, “Expression & Perception,” introduces artists such as Alex Kizu and Pablo Lehmann, whose practices expand letters into spatial and bodily experiences. Finally, Chapter 4, “Culture & Inspiration,” focuses on three media platforms, Slanted, TYPE01, and Another Graphic, all of which continue to approach typography as culture through their own unique perspectives. Moving between “reading” and “feeling,” this issue reconsiders the significance and possibilities of typographic expression that resonates with the viewer’s emotions and consciousness.
